The 2009 fishing season is
coming on fast. A tough economy, lower gas prices, and Big King
Salmon out of Glen Arbor, waiting for a fight!! |

Here is a quick review of last year’s fishing season The Chinook were bigger last year. We
had many fish in the 15 to 18 lb range and an occasional 20 lb fish
getting caught. I heard of 4 or 5 fish in the 30 lb range. In May
and June we had some nice Kings, with good numbers, of Lake Trout.
Late June, early July was a bit tough. We had predominate southwest
wind packed warm water on the Northwestern shoreline, from Frankfort
to Leland. We had 60° water down 160 ft. That’s deep for this early
in the season. We managed some nice fish out by the Manitou’s during
this period. Mid July we finally had some North wind, which set up a
good thermal cline. The big king’s really kicked in and they were
feisty! The largest fish we boated was 24 lbs. All of August was
great salmon fishing. September held some good 2 and 3 year fish
around South Manitou. |
Thanks for a Great 2008 Season! ![]() Check out the Great Catches and Memories from last season! |

Michigan Charter Boat Association Meeting News In October Sue and I attended
the Michigan Charter Boat Association meeting in Alpena. The DNR
reported the charter boat catch reports were down 20 to 30%. This is
good because Lake Michigan had too many salmon for the amount of
forage fish and alewives available. That’s the reason for the
smaller fish the past few years. The DNR also reported they were
raising the daily limit from 3 to 5 kings. That means the early
limit catch probably will be a thing of the past. I wrote an article
for the Grand Traverse Area Sport’s Fishing Association on the
subject, as to why the DNR changed the limit.
It is posted on my
website. |

MSU Sea Grant Fishery Workshop I attended the MSU Sea Grant
Fishery workshop in January. This meeting was held in Ludington.
It’s hard to soak up all the information. This workshop we discussed
the Biology and Food chain of Lake Michigan from the muddy bottom to
the top predator the King Salmon. How invasive species are affecting
Lake Michigan. Plus cormorant and the Lamprey control, all
fascinating stuff for somebody who loves the big lake as much as I
do. |

Supporting the Fish Cleaning Station I’ve been to a few meetings to
support the fish cleaning station with the GTASFA. Elmwood Township
is expanding its Marina and park. There is a very good chance we
will finally have a fish cleaning station in Traverse City. This has
been going on for over 10 years. The Traverse City Sports Fishing
Association is still plugging away, but we do have a light at the
end of the tunnel. Hopefully it will all fall together in the next
year or two. |

Fishing Last Autumn and Winter Now back to fishing. Fall perch was good. I didn’t get out as much as I wanted to. The white fish were hitting great in West Grand Traverse Bay during December, but was cut short by the cold weather, and the boat ramps freezing up. Ice fishing has been spotty. I pretty much stuck to the sure thing. Night fishing for the tasty smelt. They are fun with good action 100 to 200 smelt a night are terrific catches. |

What to expect for a 2009 Charter out of Glen Arbor Looking forward to spring Lake Trout and White fish jigging in March and April. May will produce good Lake Trout catches. Lake Trout numbers are way up. Late May early June, Memorial weekend. The big Kings should follow the alewives in to spawn. King’s and Lake Trout should be good. |

July and August should have large King’s. The
Salmon fishery should be the same as last year. With the Chinook
size a bit bigger than last year. Less and more feed makes a chunky
feisty salmon. I don’t think you’ll have the 2 to 3 hour limit
catches; we’ve had in past years. The Charter to expect is the 20 lb
King you have a good chance of fighting, plus some average 10 to 18
fish in the box. |

Traverse Bay will have great Lake Trout fishing
this year, numbers are way up. Salmon will be hard to come by until
late August. Again the fish will be large. |

Hopefully the economy will give in a bit, so
you can get out fishing. Lake Michigan can clear your mind, and give
you a good perspective on life. |
